Any girl over the age of ten can become a Guide as long as she is able to understand, and wants to make, the Guide Promise.

Becoming a Guide is all about belonging to a group, learning new skills, making new friends and helping others. Each Guide is encouraged to achieve her own personal goals through a progressive programme with the opportunity to work for a wide variety of badges. This allows the girl to mature and develop at her own pace.

Guides work together in Patrols, groups of four to eight girls, providing a ready-made group of friends and helping the girls to feel that they belong to something special. They elect their own leader.
A Patrol plans its own activities with the support of the Guide Guider so that each Guide learns to share in decisions that effect herself and others in the Patrol.

The following Programme is aimed at girls aged 10 –14:

Promote opportunities for Guides that are fun, challenging and stimulating.

Involve Guides in activities that encourage development and citizenship.

Involve Guides in making decisions about their own lives, their local community and the wider world.

Encourage personal interests that will enhance and contribute to a guide’s future lifestyle.

Promote personal development – spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical, social and moral.

T
he programme is based on guiding’s Five Essentials which are the five key figures that provide a foundation for effective Guide Units.  They are:

Guides work together in small groups - the need for peer approval

Guides are encouraged to govern themselves and make their own decisions - the need for independence

Guides have a balanced and varied programme - the need for opportunities and experiences

Guides care for the individual - the need for love and affection

Guides share a commitment to a common standard - the value of doing your best.

The Guide Promise

I promise that I will do my best:
To love my God,
To serve the Queen and my country,
To help other people
and To keep the Guide Law.

The Guide Motto

Be Prepared!

The Guide Law

1. A Guide is honest, reliable and can be trusted.

2. A Guide is helpful and uses her time and abilities wisely

3. A Guide faces challenges and learns from her experiences.

4. A Guide is a good friend and a sister to all Guides.

5. A Guide is polite and considerate.

6. A Guide respects all living things and takes care of the world around her.
